Chapter Fourteen

Erica looked down at the papers strewn on the floor and once again considered her options. She already knew from past experience that getting her and the twins down there to pick them up might be doable. Getting all three of them back onto the couch afterward wasn’t going to happen. Not without help. She knew Brad was down the hall working. She knew that, if she called him, he’d come to her aid without complaint. She knew that because she’d already done just that multiple times this morning.

Erica stared longingly at the pages she knew held the information she wanted to read. She’d received more information about one of the cold cases she’d been working on. It had slipped from her hands when she’d opened it. Erica sighed just as her phone buzzed. She twisted slightly to get it from the table next to her, then smiled and responded quickly.

Megan walked into the living room a moment later. “I didn’t want to bother Brad if he was working.”

“Good plan and great timing. Can you pick those up for me?” Erica pointed at the pages on the floor.

Megan sat down next to the scattered papers. In addition to the pages Erica was indicating, there were other folders and pages everywhere. Megan gathered up the pages Erica wanted first and handed them to her, then began working on the rest.

“Thanks, the folders keep getting away from me,” Erica mumbled as she read the pages.

“I think I have these all in order,” Megan mumbled back as she matched up the file stamps showing the file name, the location where it was saved on the computer, and the time on the bottom of the pages. “These must be old printouts.”

Erica nodded absently. “Yeah, some of them go way back.”

“Did you have any more luck with the runaway teen case?” Megan asked. The case they had discussed the last time she’d visited Erica had intrigued Megan.

“That’s what I’m reading now, actually. There’s not much here.” Erica set the pages down in her lap in frustration. “I was hoping these would tell me something new.”

“No help?” Megan asked.

Erica shook her head. “No, not really. It’s just a verification of the make and model of the car that burned with the two victims inside. It’s hard to tell from the photos I have what it is with any certainty, so I wanted to double check. I guess it’s better than nothing. I was just hoping for more.”

“Was the make and model too common to help as clues?” Megan asked. “Maybe if there was something unique about it?”

“It was seriously old,” Erica said slowly. “Interesting angle, thanks. So, what brings you here?”

Megan explained the situation with Marcy and Tom’s request.

“Yeah, I figured you’d be all over that. You know that I’m not on the case and I couldn’t talk about it if I were.”

“I know. I was just wondering if I ran some ideas past you, you might be able to give me some hints if I’m on the right track,” Megan said.
